Photographer and Artist at Kimberly Bryant
What were you doing before traveling?
I was working at an art gallery in Victoria, BC, and paying really high rent!
Wow, so many answers come to mind. To experience life fully, I suppose; to drink it in, soak it up, be challenged and learn. I started traveling late compared to most travelers from the West. There reached a tipping point when it became clear that there was so much I needed to see and experience in order to become myself. Since then, my desire to travel has only multiplied! Being in different places, seeing new cultures and meeting interesting people fuels creative tendencies like nothing else, except maybe love.
What are you working on right now?
Improving my photography and artwork is really important to me right now. I feel like I haven’t really started taking pictures yet. Research is a big part of this process, finding inspiration in old film and photo movements. I’m searching and experimenting. Japanese new wave films from the 60’s & 70’s are running through my head, along with the resurgence of photomontage. I’m currently entertaining my curious desires by exploring self-portraiture.
Drawing-wise, I’m doing my usual empathy drawings and playing with mixed media. I enjoy seeing my emotions and stories on paper. Aside from that, the year’s intentions include a comic, some eco-friendly fashion print designs and a few writing projects. There are other things in my heart, but I’ll keep them there for now.
What motivates you?/ What are your dreams for the future?
My desire to experience myself fully –and, by extension, the world- is the primary motivator in both my art and travel. The past several years of my life have been, through necessity, a beautiful beginning to a life-long healing journey. Creative expression plays a fundamental role in this for me. My work is a way to empathize with myself, others and the bright, colourful world out there.
Travel has inspired much of my recent photography, as it allows me to visually document my journey. I feel that my focus will soon shift to more concept-based work in near future.
In terms of future goals, I’m currently looking for a business/creative partner for a long-term website project that’s in my mind/heart. (Curious? Get in touch!) There’s also a community performance piece concept floating around inside my head. I’m excited to work on creating an opportunity to realize it. Like everything, it will happen when the time is right!
